:)G'day Ken et al Just got back into the habit of visiting this site, been off computers lately with the rubbish that is going around. Noticed the bit on the site about the stoker involved in the boat incident, here is my version. I remember an incident at about that time but my version is different, mainly because I fronted the table over being involved. It happened at thingyatoo Is at the end of a refit. I’d been on a run around the locals in Balmain and picked up a roll of hot chips and a few king browns to get me by while waiting for the ship’s boat on Balmain wharf. After a wait of about 20 minutes a boat came along side, had not finished my brews, so decided to give this one a miss. Suddenly a person appeared in the boatshed yelling to get onboard and bring the goodies. Being a bit confused I got onboard and the boat takes off. It is at this stage I discover that the boat is being driven, not by the duty coxswain, but by Ben Franklin (stoker) and crew of Barney Barnes (stoker) and I think Clem Wilmott (stoker). We did a tour of all the streets Hunters Hill, Greenwich, etc), a quick spin around Spectacle Is and back to thingyatoo wharf. It was here that I alighted and returned onboard to be questioned by the gangway staff. At about this time the water police were informed and were heading up the river to meet the F.U.B. (Fast Utility Boat). Ben decided to take them on a merry chase. Down through the harbour out to the heads, police did not want to go after him through the heads so Ben turned back and headed back up the river towards Circular Quay. I think that he passed on the inside of a berthing ship and the wharf and went from ahead to full astern, bending the shaft. He alighted from the boat at the maritime/customs wharf and took off into the park. He was caught somewhere here. At the table I got a warning because of my state, Fairly sure Ben got 3 months up the river, Barney similar and am not sure of Clem. Will try to confirm this with Ben if I can. A short history for those that think they know me. Joined Supply Sept 68 to Jan 71 Then Aug 76 to Oct 78 Went from stoker to Kellick, got AwC BWC ABWC TWC, was TOW, worked all machinery spaces, RAS deck and laundry. Got to know the ship well.Still in contact with a few ex Supply blokes, John Dunne, Sam Walker, Howard Gilliland, Blue Craggs, Dixie Lees, Wally Flatt, Mac Mcgregor, Morrie Jeppersen and a few names that are not forthcoming. Hoping there are a few stokers still alive out there and am awaiting a reply. Bocky

After being on the slops last night I have finally thought of the third person in this incident, it was not Clem but Mary Nugent. A couple of nights after the incident he attempted to swim from thingyatoo Is to Balmain wharf, in the middle of the night, not sure if he succeeded but was later discharged. Amazing what the memory syrup can do. Bocky

Hi Bocky, guess I should set things straight.. I was the stoker that took the skippers boat for a harbour cruise, can,t remember all on board that nite but Lindsay Shanks and Barney Barnes were definetly part of the crew. Spent my Xmass in 1MCE with some others ( not related to this story) and eventually picked up my hook and good conduct badge from DHD Smythe who was the skipper at the time. hope to catch up with you all this year Dave K ex LSMTP

On Ya Dave. It's good to see some of the people that had a bit of initiative and liked to keep the Stokers on top of the hit list at the Skipper's table.
PS i'd remove that ex in front of LSMPT too, once a Stoker, always a Stoker.

Hi all,
Good to see a Tanker forum, hope it continues to grow.
I have fond memories of Supply, work hard, play hard tended to be the norm, particularly sootblowing. Hard yards that lot.

Hey not bad for a dibbie! As a Chippie or 2nd class stoker I may count as the first real engine room sailor to enter the site - you are well out of your domain as I was once at the helm on the bridge of success - the officer of the day kicked me off the wheel when he learned I was a stoker - each to their own I suppose - It was good up on the "fresh'ers" for a few minutes though - until back down the "black hole" I went - keep up the good waries mate! = BO
